This woodblock prints shows an episode of the Sansôdayû (山荘太夫) Japanese myth about two aristocratic children who are sold into slavery, during the Heian period (794-1185). The myth was also the base of a famous novel by Mori Ogai (Sanshôdayû 山椒大夫), witch in turn was the base of the no less famous movie Sansho the Bailiff (1954), Kenji Mizoguchi's masterpiece and one of the best of all Japanese films.
